Chain Letter

Remember those chain letters from when we were growing up - where you were supposed to send letters to some person you didn't know, and the whole point was to see how many letters you would get? Then as we got older, the chain letters turned into something where you were supposed to send items to people - dish towels or recipes or something like that.

Did you ever actually do one of these? I never did...I guess you can always use dish towels, but I like to pick out my own. And I don't cook much, so I don't need more recipes.

But, I got a chain letter last week that got me all excited. It was a BOOK chain letter! You are supposed to send a book that you recently read to one person, and then you send the letter to 6 other people, and if they follow through, then you should get 36 books!

I love to read! And since the weather will probably have me hiding out this winter, what could be better than hot coffee, a warm fire, and a great book?

I tried to pick carefully when I chose who to send the letter to. I have a lot of friends, but not all of them are readers like I am. I hope I picked well....and I hope they pick well so that I get a bunch of cool books!

My kids will never...

Ok, so I don't have kids yet, but when I do, we will teach them how to behave, and if they don't behave there WILL be consequences.

My husband dressed up as a monster this year for Halloween...he does this EVERY Halloween. He sits on the porch and acts like a dummy and as the kids are walking away, he moves and scares them. He's very sensitive to the kids' ages...if it's a small child, he just moves his hand, if it's an older child, he moves faster...and if it's some 10 year old hoodlum who kicks him in the face, he lunges and chases him off the porch...with ME right behind him.

Yes, that happened twice tonight. First a junior high age girl kicked him in the ribs...he jumped at the whole pack of them forcing them to run right for the corner of my porch...all of us watching from inside rolled on the floor laughing. We hadn't seen the rib jab. Later in the night, a punk 10 year old walked right up to him and kicked him in the face!

You might be saying, well, the kids thought he was a dummy. True, but do you teach your kids it's ok to kick someone else's property, whether it's breathing or not? C'mon, show a little respect. B handled it better than I did. I grabbed the kid by the back of the neck and forced him off my porch. We turned the lights off right after that, but B has a red mark on his cheek to remind him.

Other than the kicking incidents, we had a GREAT night. My SIL, her mom, and her 2 precious girls (Little Red Riding Hood and Tinkerbell) came over, along w/ 2 more of our friends and their little ones (a cow and Superman). We went trick-or-treating for about 10 houses until we were all so cold we couldn't feel our hands, then headed back to the house to eat pizza and hand out candy. Imagine 6 adults, 4 kids, 1 monster, and 2 dogs making their way down the street together...we were quite a sight!

The best part of Trick-or-Treating was walking up to a house with a pumpkin carved with the UTexas logo and watching my friend's son yell, "Go OU," as the lady opened the door. Classic! She teased us back by going back inside and taking the candy with her...but she came back.

Since Halloween is now over, that means November is almost here...I can't believe it!

"Welcome to Kansas"

This greeting was yelled to me from a passing minivan as I got out of my car at work yesterday morning…let me back up…during my drive to work yesterday morning, I noticed that my lips were chapped, so I dug into my purse and pulled out my handy dandy MAC lip gloss. As I titled the rear view mirror to expertly apply my lip gloss, I thought – it’s really windy outside and when I get out of the car, my hair is going to blow and stick to my lips…but I HATE having dry lips, so I kept going. So, back to the parking lot at work…I got out of the car, and IMMEDIATELY my hair is blowing everywhere! I couldn’t see, and I couldn’t push my hair out of my face because my hands were full of all my junk. That’s when I heard the voice…”Welcome to Kansas!” I realized as the car drove away that it was my plant manager who shouted to me. I waved as best I could and tried to see through my messy hair to find the door to the office.

The wind is INSANE here….it blows and blows and makes a mess. I was so excited to move away from Desert California so I would have less dust in my house. Man, was I wrong! It is MORE dusty here than where we came from…I guess because of how much the wind blows.

*********************************************************************************

There are a bunch of train tracks that I have to cross to get to work. There are 3 places down this road where I can cross them to get to work. There’s usually a long line to turn at the first crossing, so I don’t take that one very much. The 2nd crossing is the one I usually use, and it’s a pretty rough road, but I only have to cross 3 tracks. If there is a train blocking the tracks (which happens OFTEN), then I pass by that crossing and go to the next crossing, where there are 14 tracks to cross – I counted them this morning! These tracks are so rough that I have to drive over them in 1st gear, going so slow that my car almost stalls. My poor Saab!

This is the first time that I have lived somewhere where the geese actually fly south for the winter – actually, the first time I’ve lived where geese live (or that I’ve noticed them). When we first go to town, the puppies and I were surprised by a strange squawking sound heard from the sky. We didn’t know what it was at first! The dogs barked and ran around the yard, and I just stared at the sky in awe. It’s the coolest thing to see them flying in a “V” across the sky.

My MIL scared the crap out of me last night. We go to bed early because we get up early. So, when she called at 9:52 pm last night, we had already been asleep for about 20 minutes. We don’t have a phone in our room, so when I woke up (with my heart pounding as always happens when the phone rings and I’m asleep), I had to run into the living room to grab the phone. She told me she had just talked to Uncle John and she needed to talk to B. I freaked out…I thought something was wrong, someone was in the hospital or someone was dead! I went back to our room, woke up B, and told him his mom wanted to talk to him. He was on the phone for about 1 minute, and then he hung up. I asked him what was wrong, and he said…”mom wanted me to play golf on Friday”…what???

I'll give in...

Ok, I've never done one of these MEME things (I don't even really know what MEME means), but this one seemed more interesting than others, so here goes...

I'M AMAZED…at how quickly I am settling into life as a Kansan (I still can not comprehend why they do some of the things that they do though - like not sell liquor on Sundays or in grocery stores)

I DOUBT…that Bill Clinton didn't inhale.

I CAN’T SEE…how people can think that illegal immigrants should be given the same priviledges as citizens or LEGAL immigrants.

I WANT TO BEAT WITH A SOCK FULL OF QUARTERS…the claims adjustor for my moving company who thinks I'm only owed $400 for all of the damage done to my things.

I'M ADDICTED…to email, my cell phone, and grabbing my hubby's butt (it's so cute!)

I FEEL BADLY…for a friend of a friend who just lost a baby (full term) due to Trisomy 18.

I WATCH…too much TV (but it doesn't take nearly as long to get through a show w/ my trusty DVR).

I LISTEN… to my friends' rants and raves and victories and losses and love that they share with me.

IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS…I would NOT go to a 50-hour a week job every day.

I WANT…my house in California to sell, and I want to start my family, and I want my immediate family to be close, and I want there to be NO ice storms this winter, and...(I could keep going, but I'll spare you)

I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT… B (my hubby of almost 6 years).

I'M OBSESSED… with checking my email.

I THINK CHILDREN…will change my life forever.

I CAN’T WAIT…for the Buddy Weekend (only 5 weeks and 2 days to go)

I'M PROUD...of my Buddy Marge for recently realizing what I've ALWAYS known about her -- she is a strong and beautiful woman!

I HAVE A DREAM…that I will live happily ever after.

I ALWAYS WEAR…foundation AND mascara.

I FEAR…losing my loved ones.

I WISH…I would become pregnant with twins! (I pray for that, too)

I ONCE ACCIDENTALLY…ran smack into a plate glass window in a restaurant (I was walking back to my table on the patio and I wasn't looking where I was going -- I thought I was walking through an open door, but NO, it was glass). I was SO embarrassed.

I NEVER…thought I would live in Kansas.

I’D KILL TO…(well, not really) keep my standard of living what it is, without having to work every day.

I MISS…lots about California -- my Buddies, my family, good pizza, George's Specials from Dewar's, coffee shops on every corner, and beer and wine from World Market

I'M LOATHE TO ADMIT…that I could live on popcorn, potato chips, and chocolate

I’LL NEVER FORGIVE… myself for choosing the worst moving company in the world (CALIFORNIA COAST VAN LINES aka HORIZON VAN LINES)

Victory has never been so sweet

Well, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but it sure feels good to beat those Chargers!!

I have to admit, it got pretty tense there for a while, but my boys stayed strong, and victory is ours!

Granted, our record is still not the greatest, but today's win will help.

Let's go Chiefs!

GREAT Weekend

Wow! This weekend is completly 180 degrees from last weekend!

I'm having a GREAT weekend, and it's still not over!

It started on Friday afternoon when I stopped to get the mail. Now, I LOVE email...it's so convenient and it really helps me stay in touch with my friends and family...but there really is something to be said for good old fashioned USPS mail. In my mailbox on Fridaywas a big box from my college buddy who lives in NorCal. Inside were 4 Chick Lit books AND some yummy chocolates (I'm going to go eat one right now). How fun is that?? Shell, thank you so much! I can't wait to start reading!

Then on Friday night, we went to the football game at the high school that B graduated from. His buddy Jay and his girlfriend went with us. It was so much fun, and SO hilarious. Those silly boys got all puffed up when we got there, talking about how maybe they would be asked to make an appearance on the field at half time, and they could not stop telling stories about "that game where..." We sent them to buy us snacks and they came back wearing CHS jerseys! AND, to top it off, CHS won! It's the first game they've won this season! Their last game of the season is this Thursday, and we've already decided that we're going. Small town life at its best!

Saturday morning, I got up much too early, and my friend and I drove a couple hours to OKC to attend the BIGGEST craft fair I've EVER been to. It was at the state fair grounds, and there were 5 HUGE buildings filled with crafts, and food, and furniture, and clothes and jewelry, and all kinds of fun things. We shopped and shopped until our feet couldn't take it anymore, and we were running into people with all the bags we were carrying. I bought a few Christmas gifts, several soup and dip mixes, some Christmas ornaments, and some really fun headbands. This is going to be a new tradition for me. I'm going EVERY year from now on! Our poor hubbies stayed home and planned on playing golf but it was rainy and cold here at home. My friend's hubby wimped out, and decided to stay home and watch football...but B braved the cold (he said it didn't rain on him), and he played 18 holes. There were only 3 cars in the parking lot!

Even though it was rainy and overcast yesterday, today is beautiful! The sky is blue, there's not a cloud in the sky, and it's cool enough that I was able to wear a turtleneck, my Ann Taylor skirt, boots, and a wool coat to church this morning. We ate at yummy McAllister's for lunch, and I'm still sipping on my sweet tea as I watch the Chiefs ROMP ALL OVER the Chargers! Sorry KK! My Buddy KK (who lives in San Diego) called at the start of the game to give me grief because my boys weren't performing...but as we chatted through the first half of the game, things turned around. Does it get any better than this??

C'mon, did the Chargers really expect to beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead?? Of course, anything can happen in the 14 minutes that are left in the game, but my weekend is going so great, I'm going to remain optimistic! Ok, as I typed this, those stinky Chargers scored again...but we'll hold 'em...Go Chiefs!

So, here I sit, watching the game, sipping sweet tea, catching up on email and blogging, doing my laundry, and looking out the window at the blue skies and green grass...oh yeah, and I'm in the middle of planning an Open House where I'll bring in a bunch of direct marketing companies to sell all of us girls a bunch of fun stuff -- jewelry, make-up, cookware, candles, scrapping stuff...and I will get free stuff from all the sales so I can do my own shopping!

When the game ends, I'm going to call my SIL, who moved yesterday and couldn't go to OKC with us, to see if she wants me to go help her unpack in her new place. Maybe I'll stop for a latte on the way...

Not a bad weekend, 'eh?

Good things do happen

But not to me...

Well, that's not entirely true...it just feels like that.

So, B's younger brother (who's my age) called us last week to tell us that he proposed to his girlfriend (about time!). We had been teasing him for almost a year to not let her get away. B's youngest brother's wife and I are excited about another SIL, and B's older sis could definitely use more chicas around with all these brothers! We will be heading up to Colorado around tax time next year for their wedding.

On Sunday, my brother called to say that he and his wife are expecting! They got married earlier this year, and his wife was anxious to get started in the kid department. B and I will become aunt and uncle again. Between the 2 of us, we have 4 nieces and 2 nephews...is it our turn yet?

We are celebrating with our family members at their good news this week. It was nice news to hear after our "miserable" weekend...maybe this trend will continue...house for sale...hint, hint...

Miserable is the word of the day

It's gloomy, rainy and cold outside today. Actually, it's been a pretty miserable weekend overall.

I have now spent more than 6 hours sitting in a salon chair this week. I got my hair "fixed" yesterday. "Fixed" is in quotes because I still hate it -- but at least I don't look like I got my hair done by a 5 year old anymore. This SUPPOSED stylist made me wait for 30 minutes before she started on me, so I was pretty hot by the time I got in that chair. I had already asked for my money back and had been told that they don't do that...so I had to allow A to work on my hair again. While I was arguing with the receptionist about how I had NO confidence that "A" could fix my hair, another girl overheard us and said that she had to come back next week to get her hair fixed because the girl in the red sweater had messed up her color...hmm, A was the one in the red sweater. Let's just say that I am not a blonde anymore. In order to not make my hair fall out, we had to color red over all of her mistakes. Oh well, dark hair matches my mood.

B worked 16 hours yesterday doing inventory at work. His partner at work, in his infinite wisdom (note the sarcasm), told half of the guys that they wouldn't be needed for inventory, even though B INSISTED that there was too much to count without them...so, the small group that showed up attempted to count the entire place...for 16 hours. Oh yeah, it's Sunday afternoon and B is back at work again...recounting all the stuff that was counted wrong last night...because people start to make mistakes after working for over 12 hours.

Since B worked today, I tagged along to my company picnic with Monica and her family. Yes, I said company picnic, and I also mentioned earlier that it's raining. That's where the miserable really kicks it up a notch. We trudged out to the park, where thankfully there was some cover in the form of a bingo hall and a wrap around porch. We took their son to the animal farm, let him ride down the wet slide one time, and then we beat it out of there. We were wet, cold, and still hungry (since they hadn't served the food yet).

From there we headed to the local Buffalo Wings place to eat and catch the beginning of my Boys' game. By halftime, we were full of wings, and I was ready to punch the idiot behind me who was cheering for the OTHER team. I came home, changed into my comfy clothes, and plopped down to see if my Boys could turn it around...but it didn't happen...so here I sit recounting my weekend to you.

Oh yeah, don't let me forget about the letter I got yesterday. The claims company who my moving company uses sent me a letter saying that they don't see where CALIFORNIA COAST VAN LINES, aka HORIZON VAN LINES, did me any wrong. And they also said that they will be so kind as to insist that CALIFORNIA COAST VAN LINES, aka HORIZON VAN LINES, pay me $0.60 per pound for my damaged items that I DID NOT pack -- that works out to $400 by their calcluations. How generous of them.

B and I were supposed to enjoy a nice meal, cooked by me, tonight...but it looks like unless we wait for a midnight snack, it ain't happening.

So, as my boys leave the stadium with their heads hung low after losing miserably, I will sign off, and pray for a better week...where the word of the day is NOT miserable.

Bear Left

Ok, this post was written AGES ago, but until I switched to beta blogger, I had all kinds of problems posting photos, so I didn't want to post this until I could include the pictures...We had a BLAST!!

I just stumbled on all the pictures we took on our family trip to Disneyland this summer. What a riot!

Dad’s birthday coincided with Father’s Day this year, and his only birthday wish was for the WHOLE family to take a trip together. He chose Disneyland and California Adventure.

So, my sis and her hubby flew out from Alabama. My bro and his wife came from Wisconsin. B and I were still in CA, so we drove down with Mom and Dad and we met my niece and nephew in L.A.

Do you have ANY idea what it’s like for 10 people to decide which ride to go to next?? The purpose of the trip was to spend time together, so we didn’t exactly want to split up, but it was tough to make decisions.

We started out the trip with dinner for Dad’s bday. My nephew, I, was the entertainment. He really likes ice cream!

We wandered around California Adventure (which, by the way, is WAY better than Disneyland if you’re over 3 years old). B won the kids a bunch of stuffed animals playing basketball (the term “won” is used loosely since each animal ended up costing about $5! But, he did make all those baskets!).

Sis and I HAD to take a picture in front of the “BEAR LEFT” sign…there’s a story behind that…in college, she came to visit me right after I moved away. We were following the directions of someone in the car who told me to “turn left”. Well, we were at a weird intersection where about 3 roads came together. So, I turned left…but that was the wrong thing. I should have taken the middle road, and I had taken the left road (hellooo, they said TURN left). After we got back on the right road, I informed the crew in my car that they should have told me to BEAR left…which sent them into uproarious laughter…I don’t see what’s so funny…Anyway, Sis and I had to relive the whole story by the sign.

We had a blast, and we fought, and we wore ourselves out, but it was a wonderful trip! I hope it starts a tradition…of course, we’ve already decided the next trip will be to somewhere relaxing!

BAD Hair Day

What's the worst part of moving away from your hometown? FINDING A HAIR STYLIST.

Ok, ok, maybe I'm looking at this a little out of perspective...but that has been a pretty stressful part of moving far far away from home.

Yes, you have to find new doctors and churches and banks and insurance agents...but I have people I can talk to about that...and recommendations that I can use.

I THOUGHT I would just look around at the girls at work and find one with cute hair and find out where she gets it done. Well, that would mean girls at work have cute hair...not so. The only one with cute hair (that I've seen so far) is my friend Monica who is in the same boat I am (she just moved to KS, too).

I ended up visiting a couple salons where I talked to stylists and checked out their prices (which are way more than I paid in CA -- what??!), and I chose a salon about 5 minutes from my house with a stylist who assured me that she could replicate the formula for my color that my last stylist (I LOVE you and miss you Krista!) had written down for me.

So, last night was my appointment...you already know the outcome by the title of this posting. But, just for fun, here are the details...

Just a side note -- I'm starting to question my decision making skills...I chose the wrong moving company, I chose the wrong hair dresser, I'm not exactly creating a good track record here.

My stylist, call her A to protect her identity (why? because I'm not THAT cruel), looked at the formula, and went to mix color. I have 2 colors weaved into my hair - a red and blonde. The red didn't look quite right in the bowl, but it was a different brand, so I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. First of all, she put the color on a little differently, but she started at the back of my head (where I couldn't see what she was doing), so I decided (hmm, decision making skills again) to keep my mouth shut.

As she got around to the side where I could see, I realized that she wasn't pulling the red all the way through to the ends. Now, since it's a different brand of color, it's not exactly the same color as I have on my hair - not to mention that red fades FAST, so it's not really red she's coloring over, it's blondish/brown...so what impact will that have? Still, I keep my mouth shut. When she's all done (which, by the way, she seemed to start rushing at the end, and I got even more nervous), she says she needs to color my ends, so she goes to get more red. What?? She then grabs all the ends that SHE THINKS have red at the roots (since the roots are in foil, how does she know?) and starts putting red on them, and I can tell she isn't using as much dye as she used on the roots.

Ok, then I sit and process for 30 minutes while she cuts some guy's hair, then she washes me out and goes to get the toner for my roots. I had told her the toner Krista used was to brighten up my roots, so the new growth wasn't as obvious. Well, I don't know what she put on my hair, but she put it all over, and my roots ARE NOT brighter.

Next, she cut it, and I think she did fine except a "trim" to me is about 1/2", not 1"...but whatever.

When she was just about finished styling it, my soon-to-be new SIL called to tell me that she and B's brother had gotten engaged on Monday, so I was a little distracted, and didn't check out the finished look very closely.

After I got home, I went to put my hair up so I could take a bath...and that's when I noticed just how bad it is... The red at my roots is MUCH darker than the ends, there are a BUNCH of places where the blonde and red are mixed together on the SAME strand. AND (yes, there's more) she didn't get all the way to the roots on some of it -- mainly at the front (which is my BIGGEST pet peeve)! I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that my neck is ALL RED from the dye. Well, after making all these findings, I had to have a glass of wine with my bath. AND THEN, while I was in the bathtub trying to rub off the red dye on my neck, I dropped my book in the water.

So, after work I will be stopping by to see A (and maybe the salon owner if necessary) to see when and how they will be fixing my hair. I'm seriously contemplating paying for Krista to fly out and do my hair from now on...

Got Faith?

It's easy to make fun of people that aren't like us. In fact, one of my favorite things to do is people watch. I love to sit and chat with friends, but sometimes it's fun to just sit and watch people as they walk by. You wonder why they wear what they wear, or if they looked in the mirror before they left the house, or if they realize you can see them dancing and singing down the street. People watching is usually done in fun, and the watchee usually doesn't have a clue.

People watching in Pennsylvania got a little out of control this week. In fact, it wasn't really people watching...it was ogling and in-your-face and inconsiderate.

We were getting ready to go out to dinner Monday evening when we heard the news. A man walked into an Amish school and shot 10 young girls in the head, then killed himself. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY??

The tragedy was the topic of discussion for most of the week. We asked a million questions...why didn't he just kill himself? Why did he chose the Amish? What was wrong with this man? Why did this happen?

The most amazing part of this whole tragedy is the way the Amish community has handled this. They lost 5 of their children, and they mourned them, but they also mourned the loss of a father and husband -- even though he was the reason they lost 5 children. They offered forgiveness to the dead man's wife, and they made it clear that they KNEW this was God's will, and that He had a plan.

A lot of us, in tragic situations, will SAY we know it was God's will, but we continue to try to figure out WHY it happened, and WHEN it will get better, and WHAT the future holds. I don't think the Amish are doing this. They accept it point-blank as God's plan, and they bond together and depend on God and each other, and they get through it and move on. They KNOW that God has saved them and that they will go to heaven when they die, so they REJOICE that their kids are in a better place, even though they miss them.

Where does faith like that come from?

I have a new respect for the Amish. I used to think they were naive and not as smart as the rest of us, but maybe we're the naive ones. They know what is most important in life...their relationship with God. They don't have the distractions that the rest of us have.

Granted, I don't think God commands us to ignore the progressions in technology that have been made in the last 100 years, but He gives us the ability to choose how we want to live. I'm glad that I don't live without electricity or my car or my cell phone, but I bet you that I could focus more on what God wants me to do without those things.

I am not ready to give up my comforts of life, but my eyes have been opened a little bit this week, and I will praying for healing for the Amish community, as well as for the family of the man who caused this.

Motor City

I'm in Detroit this week for training. This is my 2nd time to Michigan. I came once about 7 years ago for my 25th birthday...my best friend from college was living here and working for GM. Not very many people spend time in the actual city of Detroit -- it's kind of scary, but the towns around it are pretty nice.

Did you know that you can drive south from Detroit and be in CANADA?? Yup, it's true! I did that when I was here 7 years ago.

Our training is in Plymouth, MI, about 20 minutes northwest of the Detroit airport. We have class during the day, and then we can do whatever we want at night. Last night a few of us went into downtown Detroit to eat at Hard Rock Cafe. The food was ok, but the important thing was that I was able to pick up my souvenir Detroit shot glass.

Tonight we went over to Ann Arbor to see the University of Michigan. We drove past the stadium first, and then we looked for a parking place so we could walk around campus a little bit. After easing the giant rental car into a parallel parking spot (perfectly, I might add), we got out and started feeding the meter. A nice college coed told us that we didn't have to pay after 6pm, so we told her thank you, and then I opened my BIG mouth. I said, oh well, at least we donated to "Michigan State"! Oops! I can never keep these 'U of' and 'State' schools straight. I don't live here. I do the same thing with the Kansas schools. I caught myself right away, and luckily she was walking away by then.

We found a store that was sporting anything and everything with Univ of Michigan on it...and all for under $20! Can you believe it?? They had shirts and sweatshirts and pants and hats and stuffed animals and glasses and golf balls and DOG SLICKERS and bottle openers...I could keep going on, but I'll spare you. I splurged and got a small gift for my hubby and a sweatshirt for myself. Now, I LOVE my alma mater, but you can't buy anything besides a bumper sticker for less than $20. What's up with that?

Tomorrow we're planning on heading to Toledo, Ohio, for dinner. It's about an hour south of us. I know that that probably doesn't sound very exciting, but I have a goal to visit all 50 states in our nation, and I haven't been to Ohio yet. I've been to 39 states so far, so this will be number 40. 10 more to go!

Hot Chicks

I finally had my first night out in Wichita.

We went out with 2 other couples on Saturday night. All 6 of us just recently moved to Kansas. One couple from Virginia, and the other one from Oklahoma. I met Monica at work, and we have already set our hubbies up on a golf date -- they went a couple weeks ago while Monica and I hit the gym. I met Shannon at the Tag Office, where we shared our frustrations of moving to a new state.

We had a blast! We met at our house, and then headed downtown to a Mexican restaurant (or, what Wichita considers a Mexican restaurant) where we chatted and joked and got to know each other. It was a lot of fun...since we're all new in town, we had all kinds of stories about finding out where things are located, how to get stuff taken care of, and how it compares to where we come from.

Us girls, of course, took the opportunity to wear cute jeans and fun heels...while the boys were dressed in jeans and shorts and sandals. After dinner, Shannon and her hubby had to head home to take care of the baby, so the rest of us went to Oscar's, where there is the HUGEST TV screen I have ever seen. It's literally 2 stories tall. B was in awe!

Even after all this excitement, we still were home by 11pm (are we old, or what??)...but the night was a success, and I can't wait to do it again.

Here's a picture of the hot mamas out on the town!

We didn't blow away

So, did you think I blew away? We didn't, but I was a little nervous at first.

Apparently, a storm came up from the south and formed pretty quickly, hence, the rushed tornado warning.

I've learned a few things along the way about "watches" and "warnings". A tornado watch means that the conditions are right where a tornado COULD form. I tornado warning means that funnel clouds have been spotted. This was a warning, but it was a radar warning which means that the radar showed some swirling clouds, but they may not have been spotted with the eye.

I guess by the time we learned about the warning and took shelter, the storm had passed us and was heading northeast. A tornado did touch down somewhere in KS, with no injuries, just property damage, but it was a ways from us.

All is well...I survived my first warning. I'm hoping that my life in Kansas follows that of some of my co-workers -- they've lived here for over 35 years and NEVER seen a tornado...maybe that's because they were hiding out in the basement while it passed overhead!

ramblings

Nothing major going on...just the same old crap...house hasn't sold, new house isn't organized, car is filthy and needs to be washed...kansas mosquitos are eating me alive...kansas something is driving dogs to lick themselves like maniacs...wind is blowing...for 6th day in a row...I'm told to get used to it...I'm getting sick - sore throat, congestion, headache.

My dad just left. He's been here for the last few days closing on the house they bought down the street. He also helped us get some things done around the house -- the cable is finally working the way it should, and the wireless router is now functional (which means I don't have to steal wireless from the neighbors anymore).

B is playing golf on Saturday with an old high school buddy...I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. There's a ton of stuff to do around the house, and I want it done, but I'm not very motivated to do it. I had suggested that after the golf thing we BBQ w/ the buddy and his gfriend, but I guess they have family coming into town. Maybe I'll go furniture shopping to replace my kitchen table that the movers demolished...my dad doesn't think we should try to use it...it's in too bad of shape.

So, this is a lame posting, but I hadn't updated it in a few days, so it's better than nothing, right?

The Buddies

Here are my Buddies. We've called each other that since 1991, I think. I was in high school...my senior year. I'm the oldest one (that's me in the middle w/ the blue top), and when I was a senior, we all started hanging out. We ranged in ages from freshman to senior, and we've stayed close ever since.

There have been times where we don't see each other for a while, and times were 1, 2, or 3 of us are closer to each other than other times...but we're all friends.

One person is missing from the picture because she lives in Indiana and couldn't come out for this event. This picture was taken the night we all went out to dinner right before I left California. There is one person in the picture who is a newer friend than high school. She fits right in with all of us, and I'm so glad we met last summer. Oh yeah! And with her around, I'm not the oldest...she's 4 months older than me!

Every year around Christmas we get together for the Buddy Weekend. We go out of town and spend the weekend acting like we're back in high school. We also started a tradition about 15 years ago (wow! that's a long time) where we do a gift exchange. We don't buy something for one person in particular...we just buy (or make -- some of these girls are WAY creative) something that most of us would like (that's not as easy as it sounds...even though we are close friends, we are all VERY different from each other), and then we draw numbers and the stealing begins. Someone opens a gift and then the next person can either open a new one or steal that one. And on we go until everyone has something.

Last year we went on a cruise for our Buddy Weekend. It was a blast! We chose last year for the big trip because no one had a nursing baby. Maybe that sounds weird, but between all 10 of us, there are 10 hubbies and 16 kids! We had so much fun that we decided every 5 years to do a big trip like that.

This year we're going up to Shaver Lake for a weekend...I'm flying out to CA for it, and I can't wait! I love you, Buddies!

13 pages

I created a 13 page document describing and showing all the problems we had with our moving company as well as all the damage done to our belongings.

They use a separate company for their claims processing, which I'm hoping is good news because that means they should be impartial. Of course, I have about 5 different websites where I will publish my moving company's name if my claim isn't resolved to my satisfaction.

Just for your viewing pleasure, here are a few choice photos of my belongings (click on them to get the larger than life, I mean TRUE to life, perspective):

Don't ever forget...

I used to wonder at my parents who remember EXACTLY what they were doing when Kennedy was killed and when John Lennon was shot…how could they remember in that much detail??

I remember what I was doing when the Challenger blew up…for the most part. I was in 6th grade in Mr. Jarman’s class. But a lot of the memories have faded.

Not so with September 11, 2001. I remember it all. I always will.

The day started off with a little different routine than usual for us. We were living in Texas, I needed to take my car to the shop, and it was B’s normal day off, so the plan was for B to follow me to the shop and then take me to work. Everything went according to schedule, and I got to work about 7:45am. I was working in an assembly plant at the time, so I headed right to the floor when I got there.

A few minutes later B called my cell phone, and he told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I didn’t really understand at first what he was telling me, and then I didn’t really believe him. He said they thought it was a commercial airliner. The girls on the line where I was couldn’t leave the line, so they asked me to go get more information.

I headed back to my office and tried to get online, but the internet was jammed up. I kept trying and finally I found out that what B told me was true. I called him back and he told me a 2nd plane had just hit the other tower. We had a live feed for Fox News in our lobby, so I did what lots of others did and headed up front to see what was going on.

I called my parents, who were in California. They were awake but they didn’t know much about it yet. Dad is an Air Traffic Controller, and he had just gotten called in to work to assist with the grounding of all aircraft. It was really hard to be so far away from them right then. They felt like they were a world away, and at the time I was scared I might never see them again.

I didn’t cry…then…I was in too much shock. After the towers fell, there wasn’t a lot of new information, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the TV. I finally went back to the floor, told the girls what I’d found out, and then went back to my desk. I remember my boss was irritated with all of us for not working – we were all glued to the computer screens. I can’t believe he expected us to keep working. In my mind, the world was over as we knew it. I think if I would have had a car, I would have left work. I couldn’t see why we needed to keep working.

I have a girlfriend who works in Manhattan, and at the time I didn’t know how close she was to the towers. I sent her an email, not really expecting a reply, but I wanted to see how she was. She wrote back pretty quickly and told me she was a ways from the terror, and she was fine. It did take her a couple days to get back to her place in New Jersey.

Much to my boss’ dismay, I did not accomplish much that day. B picked me up after work, we picked up my car and we went home. We watched the news for a while, but I just couldn’t take it anymore. There was nothing new to report, and I couldn’t stand to see the footage from the towers, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania. We finally took the dog and headed out for a walk. It was the first time we had ever done that. We held hands, tried to enjoy the outdoors, and we talked about what would happen now.

I really felt that the end of the world was upon us. I couldn’t see how I would EVER feel safe again. I realized how much my husband and my family meant to me, and I was sorry for all the time I’d wasted being angry or upset with them.

That Friday I went to a special prayer service at church. We sang songs and prayed silently and as a group. It helped me to realize that these terror attacks were not from God. They were from the Devil. They were orchestrated by evil people, and God was there to help us recover and to become a stronger nation in spite of what had happened to us.

I can’t believe it’s been 5 years. To me it really feels like it’s been much longer than that because we have settled back into our old ways. But...I cry every time I see footage on TV, or when Alan Jackson’s song plays, or when I read about it in a novel. I can’t bring myself to watch the movies that have come out. I don’t need that graphic of a reminder…I can see it inside my head often enough.

Won't you be my neighbor?

We have been in our house 6 days. Since our movers showed up on Tuesday, we have met 4 of our neighbors. I think that’s AMAZING. I have NEVER lived in a neighborhood where adults made an effort to meet people. Kids are a different story…they scope out the other kids and make friends instantly, and I think that’s usually how the adults get to know each other…so maybe that’s why we never meet anyone, we don’t have kids.

In all the neighborhoods I’ve lived in, I’ve always dreamed of welcoming newcomers to the hood, or being welcomed by others, but it’s never happened. In our last neighborhood, I debated about making cookies and taking it to the house across the street when they moved in. That was my intent. But, the couple times I tried to catch the eye of the newcomers to say hi, they looked the other way, so I never made the cookies. In fact, one night I came home and saw that their headlights were on in the car in the driveway. I went over to tell them, and the lady looked at me like I was crazy until she followed me out to the driveway.

That is why I’m so jazzed about where we are now. While we were outside with the movers on Tuesday, the people on either side of us came out and introduced themselves to us. And it wasn’t just a quick hello…they talked about themselves, asked us questions, and both of them said they wished they’d known we’d been there with no furniture because they would have made us dinner. They both also volunteered to loan us stuff until we got unpacked. Wow!

The next day a couple from down the street stopped by to introduce themselves, and they invited us to a luau this weekend. Then a while later, the lady across the street brought us some homemade goodies. And boy were they good!

Yesterday I had to go register my car. Every state is different, and Kansas requires you to have an inspection before you can apply for tags. Well, yesterday you could have the inspection and get the tags at the same location, so off I went. There was a lot of confusion about how to do this, so all of us in line started talking. The girl sitting next to me had just moved from Virginia. We started chatting, and before we were through the line we had exchanged phone numbers so we could meet up again. I love it!

I guess some of the stereotypes about the Midwest are true…people are much nicer here.

Tally

The truck finally showed up on Tuesday. I'm so exhausted from thinking about it and unpacking that I don't have the energy to be eloquent in my writing today...so here's the down low:

  • mover yelled at me because I didn't have cash (he said a check from my credit union doesn't count as a "bank check")
  • mover charged me $300 more because he had to walk so far (never mind that B and I unloaded almost as much as he did)
  • boxes stacked upside down, on their sides, wedged in -- all visible when he opened the truck
  • lawnmover broken
  • ceramic table base broken
  • nightstand missing 3 feet
  • headboard missing finials
  • CD rack in MANY MANY pieces
  • dresser has gouges
  • entertainment center has gouges
  • drinking glass broken
  • MANY plates broken (including antique)
  • punch bowl broken
  • B's custom made valet broken
  • one box MISSING (full of drinking glasses)

And I'm only done unpacking HALF of our stuff! Somehow, I'm remaining relatively calm.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

"For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever."

This is the third year I'm reading through the One Year Bible. This will be the FIRST year I start and finish it...on time. This year I bought the New Living Translation as it makes for easier reading. I use a more literal translation for studying, but I like the NLT for daily reading.

I'm a little behind on my reading...this move has my priorities all messed up. I caught up while we were driving from CA to KS, but now I'm behind again.

Today I started to try to catch up...the above scripture from 2 Corinthians is from the reading for Aug 31.

My instinct when I get stressed out is to take everything on my own shoulders, and everything regarding this move has followed this pattern. As I sat (on the floor) in my living room today, in tears, I realized that I hadn't read my daily reading in a while...hmm, could that have something to do with my stress?

So, I pulled out my One Year Bible and started reading. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 stood out to me...literally, as it's the recommended memory verse for Aug 31. How appropriate.

I've been so worried about "my" stuff getting here that I completely overlooked that it isn't MY stuff at all, it's HIS. He allowed me to have it, he gave me the skills and opportunities to achieve it. He can also take it all away (interestingly, I've been reading Job for the Old Testament portion of my readings lately).

I pray that I don't have to live without those things that are still on a truck somewhere, but my eyes certainly have been opened tonight. God - Thank you for pointing me back in the right direction. I already feel better. It's out of my hands now...directly into His.

Pouting

It's my birthday. I slept on the floor last night. There is NO sign of the moving truck.

Happy 32nd year on this planet.

Last night we had dinner and cake and ice cream at my in-laws, and then we played my favorite domino game...chicken foot.

Then we came home to an empty house and bedded down on the floor again. My BIL loaned us an air mattress, so I thought I might actually get some good sleep last night. No luck...the mattress deflated in the middle of the night, so I was now laying on top of a cold plastic sheet, on the floor.

I woke B up to tell him I was going to pump it up again (it's pretty loud with the electric pump), and when I finished, Rerun wanted outside. Since we don't have the dog door in yet, I had to let him out myself. Well, he is still getting used to the yard, so he wanted to explore at...1:30am. I didn't have my glasses or my contacts on, and I thought he was throwing up, so I went to grab my shoes so I could check on him. When I got back outside, I saw him go tearing, full speed, across the yard after a rabbit! Full speed and headed right for the wrought iron fence...I yelled at him to stop, but he didn't listen, and then I heard the fence rattle...then silence.

I yelled at him again, but no response...I thought my dog was dead! I went running across the lawn and found him rigid staring into the darkness where the rabbit had gone. I don't know if he actually hit the fence or not, but he was going pretty fast. I grabbed him, both of our hearts were pounding, and I lugged him back inside.

I laid back down on my newly pumped up air mattress and tried to go back to sleep. Just as I was falling asleep, I started sinking to the floor again...I have NO idea what is wrong with this mattress. I gave up on it and rolled onto the floor.

I woke up this morning in a BAD mood.

I wanted to go to church, but B wouldn't go with me, so instead I asked him to take me to breakfast for my bday. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that many people eat breakfast in Wichita. We drove around and around looking for somewhere to eat. We found an IHOP and a Panera...both with lines out the door. We ended up at Village Inn, which ended up to be ok. I had chocolate crepes filled with strawberries and whipped cream...mmm...they were YUMMY!! I got my caffeine fix taken care of, and I started to get into a better mood.

When we got home from breakfast, I pulled my hair back, threw on a cap, and took off in my baby (aka Saab) with the top down and headed for the nail salon. After a manicure and pedicure and a short shopping trip to Target...I feel much better.

Still no sign of the moving truck, but there's not much I can do now. I just pray that our stuff shows up in one piece with no damage...before my 33rd birthday.

not yet

Driver just called me. He is at the Arizona/NM border! That is where we ended up at the end of our first day of driving.

He got stopped at a DOT inspection and has to fix stuff on the truck - he wouldn't tell me what.

I asked him why he told me he would be here today...he says he told me he would call today to get directions. Liar!

May not get our stuff tomorrow. I'm pissed!

here I sit

It's Saturday, September 2. We have moved into our house...however, I use the term "moved in" loosely. We have unloaded and put away everything we brought in our cars.

The movers haven't showed up yet. We have no cable, no phone, and I'm stealing wireless internet from one of our neighbors to type this.

I got into a shouting match with the moving company on Thursday evening. Through this whole process, I've been assured that I will be COMPLETELY SATISFIED, that my things have a 95% chance of showing up on Friday, September 1.

Well, a week or so ago, I was told I had a 95% chance of my things showing up on Saturday, September 2 (TODAY!!).

Thursday I was told I have a 95% chance of them showing up on Sunday, September 3 (my birthday, BTW). Where the heck did they learn to calculate statistics???

I got a little irate at this news. I reminded them that they told me they are trying to rebuild a very tarnished reputation, and that this IS NOT the way to do it. I also told them if my things didn't arrive by Sept 2, I would be filing a complaint with the BBB. They gave me the driver's number and told me to call him directly.

They told me that the driver had left L.A. on Wednesday, Aug 30...Ok, it's AT MOST a 28 hour drive from LA to Wichita...so if he won't arrive until Sunday, and let's give him the benefit of the doubt that he will arrive EARLY on Sunday, then he's only driving 7 hours a day!! We drove 10-11 hours/day and made it in 2.5 days. DOT says he can drive 11 hours/day legally. What is going on???

So, I called the driver, Paul, and talked to him. I asked him what time on SATURDAY would he be arriving. He told me mid day, probably between 10am-12pm. I asked if he wanted directions, and he said he would call back when he got closer to get the directions.

Well, it's 11:30am on Saturday, and he hasn't called. I've tried to call him about 1o times and his phone goes right to voice mail (I've left 3 messages).

Buyer beware -- stay away from any company called CALIFORNIA COAST VAN LINES or HORIZON VAN LINES.

From sea to shining sea…er, I mean Kansas

What you will read below may sound like a big whopping lie – or at least some sort of exaggeration…unfortunately, every word will be true.

Our 1500 mile drive across the country started after 5 hours of sleep, at 6:45 AM on Monday morning.

The reason we only had 5 hours of sleep is we spent most of Sunday hanging out at my parents’ house because someone was supposed to be looking at our house. We got home at 8:30 pm on Sunday, only to find that NO ONE had shown up to see the house…big surprise.

We started loading the car as soon as we got home…it kind of reminded me of my country dancing days when I had to lay down on the bed to get my jeans zipped. There was NO way we were going to get everything into our H3 (which isn’t as big as you probably think). After pushing and pulling and yelling and sweating for 30 minutes, we started to look at all our junk…and decided what we would leave behind. The 200 pounds of extra tile was the first to go. We had planned on tiling our new basement bathroom, but there wasn’t room for our clothes with the tile in the car. Next was the $100 of cleaning supplies…I pared it down as much as I could. B wanted the new propane tank for the BBQ to go with us, but it was ousted, too. After that I sent B to the shower and then I put my engineering skills to work…make everything else fit. About 30 minutes later, I shut (forcefully) all the doors of the truck and headed in to clean the house.

As I walked around picking things up, cleaning sinks and throwing old food out, I realized I was doing all that through tears. We worked REALLY hard on our house…we designed it, we chose the lot, we worked with a builder for almost 2 years, and now we were leaving it. And it doesn’t help that all the feedback from the people who show up to see the house is that they DON’T like it. Whatever.

Anyway, back to 6:45 am…we left our house and headed over to Mom and Dad’s to say a final goodbye. I teared up again as we drove away…but, I dried up just in time to get to Mom and Dad’s…so I could start all over again.

We weren’t there long, just enough time for Dad to pray for us, Mom to give us homemade cookies, my cousin to make silly jokes and then we hugged and loaded up again. After filling up with gas, we hit the road. We had given the puppies small doses of a sedative (prescribed by their vet) to help them from being anxious in the car…not sure I should have cut the pill in half with my teeth as my tongue got numb pretty quickly…guess we know it works, on me at least. It didn’t do much for the pups until we were almost out of CA. It was a pretty painful ride up the mountains – think small child on a plane. This was the longest the dogs had ever been in the car, and we sure were glad that they were in their crate in the back seat.

We drove all the way to Gallup, NM, the first day…about 11 hours in the car. I think we stopped 6 times so the dogs could get out and we could get gas. Even with all those stops, we were never out of the car for more than 10 minutes at a time.

We weren’t sure how far we’d get that first day, so we hadn’t made a hotel reservation. When we got to Gallup, we had 2 choices – the good side of the tracks (there really were tracks) with expensive hotels that may or may not allow pets, or the bad side of the tracks with cheap and scary looking hotels (or is it motels). In the spirit of conserving funds, we chose the cheap side and checked into a Super 8.

The desk chick saw the dogs, so she tacked $10 on to our room rate, and gave us the keys. We were on the 2nd floor at the back of the hotel. We unloaded, dragged the dogs up, and found our room. There was no clock, the single lamp in the room didn’t work, and there was some weirdo hanging out in an ugly van in the parking lot by our vehicle. It was about 8pm, and I hadn’t eaten since lunch, and that “I haven’t had protein in too long” headache was starting to form (thank you, Mom). B told me to go take a shower and he would try to find something to order for dinner.

Well, in my altered state, I went into the bathroom, and somehow thought we had NO towels. B called the front desk, and they told us they had NO towels anywhere – which we didn’t get because the parking lot was empty and we thought that meant most of the rooms were also empty. The chick said she would call us right back. While we waited for that call, we decided to skip out, get our money back and suck it up and pay more for a place on the other side of the tracks. I called her back, said we wanted our money back and we’d be right down. I’m not sure she knew how to take that, but she said ok. As we were trying to drag everything out in one trip (it took 3 to get it up there), B noticed that there were, in fact, towels in the bathroom. Oops.

I forgot to mention that B’s golf clubs had been riding on top of the car the entire time. Since we were unsure of the area around the Super 8, he had taken them down and brought them into the room. So, before we can leave, he has to secure them back on top of the car. I was holding the dogs’ leashes, and B was standing on the running board, so I tried to reach the tie downs for B from the front seat. I guess he didn’t know I was there, and when he stepped down he almost stepped on the dogs, which made him lose his balance, and the golf clubs, in their hard plastic case, came tumbling down. I have NO idea how none of us got hit by them…or how they didn’t damage the car.

We were all ok, but that didn’t stop the stream of 4-letter words out of both of our mouths…the poor puppies were scared out of their minds. I was trying to help, but B didn’t want my help, and we were hungry, tired, hot, grouchy, you name it. We decided to put the dogs back in their crate so B could finish tying down the clubs while I went to get our money.

20 minutes later we were driving back to the RIGHT side of the tracks. We ended up at a MUCH nicer place for about $30 more and we dragged everything inside, AGAIN. I hit the shower while B got the dogs settled, and then we decided to order food from the restaurant next door. By the time B got back with the food, I couldn’t see straight, my head hurt so badly. I popped 3 Advil, downed my eggs and toast, and turned out the light.

I got much better sleep than B did, or the dogs for that matter. B was up at least 4 times with them during the night. It was the first night that the pups had spent away from home, and they weren’t sure what was going on. We didn’t know if they needed to go out or they just wanted out of our room, but we didn’t want to take a chance.

By the time we woke up the next morning, my head was back to normal, but B was still grouchy and tired. We loaded up and hit the road again. The pups did much better the 2nd day, and it seemed like it would be a better day…until…

I think we were still in New Mexico when we got the first phone call. My good friend Michele called to say that our friend was missing from a mountain bike ride (see the previous 2 posts). Not too long after that, we got a call from our loan officer saying she needed a bunch of paperwork (bank statements, W2’s, pay stubs, etc) in order to process our loan. Ok, remember how stuffed full our car is? Well, I do have ONE box of important papers that has some of this, but not all of it. And WHY oh WHY is she calling 24 hours before we’re supposed to close to tell me that she needs more info??? I tell her what I have and she says she’ll call me back in a few minutes.

While I’m talking to her a 2nd time, we’ve started driving through some road construction where it’s one lane in each direction. All of a sudden, we hear a huge THUNK! and what do you know…a rock in the windshield…that spreads immediately. What’s next?

I finish the conversation with the loan gal by promising to email and fax all the info I have from the hotel. Our plan was to make it to OKC, but about 70 miles west of the city, we decide to stop in a small town. We find a nice place to stay, but they don’t want pets, so we have to sneak the dogs in. Our room is close to the office, and it’s not dark yet, so we park a few blocks away and take the pups for a walk. It’s during this walk that I get the call about finding Guy’s body. Please God, what’s next now?

Once it’s dark, we head back to the hotel and sneak the dogs in. After many more broken phone calls, since the reception is horrible, and an hour of frustration at trying to connect to the internet, we turn off the light and get some sleep. At least the dogs handle the 2nd night much better, and B only has to get up one time.

Travel was much easier today (we chatted with a nice Texan couple at a rest stop in OK – people are MUCH nicer here than in CA), but I was a bundle of nerves by the time we drove into Wichita. We had to go to the bank to get money for closing on the house, do the walk-thru and sign all the papers. Before we did that, we talked to our realtor in CA, lowered the price on our house by $50k again, and tried (with no luck) to find out how much $$ we needed for close on our new home. About 3 minutes from the bank, the loan officer finally called back with a number (an estimate).

I was very impressed that the gal in the credit union remembered me and she chatted with me while I waited for my money. We got to the house for the walk-thru about 30 minutes early, so we took the dogs and walked around the lake down the street from our new house. We saw a family of ducks, beautiful landscaping, and some kind of crane. I love our new neighborhood.

I was nervous for the walk-thru because we’ve had a hard time with the sellers (actually I think it’s with their agent), but it went great. The sellers were home, so B sat on the front porch with the puppies while our agent and I walked the house. Everything looked great, and we found out that their movers will move them out tomorrow (not the 1st like they’d said before), so we should get possession at noon on Friday – B’s birthday.

We headed over to the title company to sign all the papers. There were more miscommunications between the title company, the agents, and the lender, so our 3pm close didn’t start until after 4pm. Of course, I found a couple mistakes but I remained pretty calm (for me anyway), and we finished all the papers by 5:05pm. Unfortunately, that was too late for our sellers to get their money. I felt bad for them…but I’m sure they can wait until tomorrow…after all they’re living in MY HOUSE from now until Friday.

As I write this, I’m sitting in yet another hotel – this one is not nearly as scary as that Super 8, we’re all clean (even the dogs), fed, and showered. Tomorrow will be yet another adventure.

Details

Here is an excerpt from an email regarding what happened to my friend:

Guy and 2 friends from work were dropped off by the shuttle Sunday morning. They started to walk up to Sherman Peak and Guy said it was too steep and too long of a climb for him. They agreed that he would go back to the drop off place and wait for the guys to come down and they would proceed down the trail together. When the guys got back to the drop off place, no Guy. There were some bikers there and they asked if they saw a cyclist and they replied that no one was here when they got there. They were worried and started down. About 1/3 of the way down, there is a check point with a log. They stopped and read the log and Guy had written in the log that he would meet them at the truck. They proceeded down the trail and got to the truck and no Guy. They called the police when he didn't show up and they started the search and rescue team Monday all day. Couldn't find a trace of him. They wouldn't let any volunteers help on Monday. Monday evening they told us that they would use volunteers on Tuesday starting at 6 a.m. to walk the trails while the Search and Rescue personnel did some of the "harder" searches. They had them going down in the ravines and rocks. They found Guy's bike on the wrong trail in the afternoon today. The Search and Rescue could then concentrate their search to a much smaller area. This bike ride is like 27 miles. Anyway, they found Guy's bike, then some pads, then some pieces of maps and lost his trail. They found him on the other side of the hill via helicopter.

I will miss you...

While we were driving today (Gallup, New Mexico to Weatherford, Oklahoma), I started thinking about what I would blog from the hotel tonight. We have had quite an adventure, and there are many things to write about...and then my phone rang...

My friend was calling to ask if I had heard the news about a former coworker. He had gone to The Plunge to mountain bike with some guys from work on Sunday. He decided not to ride one of the trails they were heading to and told them he would meet them later. No one saw him after that. The first phone call was to tell me that everyone was looking for him.

The news shocked me...it had been 2 days since he was last seen (Sunday until today, Tuesday). I prayed for the best -- that he had gotten lost, disoriented, injured but not seriously, and he just couldn't get out.

After we checked into the hotel here in Weatherford, my phone rang again. It was my friend again. They found our co-worker's body. The story is still missing a lot of details, but the simple fact is that our friend/co-worker/colleague lost his life.

From then on my phone rang with people calling to see if I had heard the news. I may have left the company to move east a few weeks ago, but they are still my friends, and I still care for all my former co-workers.

Our friend who died was a wonderful person. He was full of life, had a great sense of humor, was smart and dedicated, and he will be missed extremely.

We used to call him the S.C., aka the Social Coordinator. He was always the one to round us all up for Happy Hour, and he ALWAYS paid for the first round -- even when we only had one round.

He was young -- maybe 38...he grew up on the east coast and had no family in our neck of the woods, but that didn't matter...he was a friend to all. I'm sure the plant is devestated. As I understand it, a lot of people made the trek to the desert to look for him yesterday and today. I'm thankful that the search & rescue group found the body and not one of my friends.

I feel so badly for the 2 guys who were with him. I have no idea how they are dealing with this right now.

I can't believe it...how could this have happened...it doesn't seem real. GM, we love you and will miss you tremendously.

Walt’s & India

My FIL took me out to dinner Tuesday night.

I got home from work about 6:30 pm on Tuesday, and my MIL was working, so it was just Dad and I. He took me to Walt’s.

Walt’s is a local hamburger/Mexican joint (only in Kansas) on the corner of the 2 main roads in town. It looks like it’s been there forever, and I’m pretty sure it has. As soon as we walked in, Dad recognized and greeted a couple people sitting down eating dinner. We walked to the counter where we could choose our meal from a huge board that sported such things as: hamburgers, salads, tacos, burritos and fries. Dad chose a fajita (which pretty much looked like a burrito), and I decided on the taco salad (which didn’t look very Mexican, but it tasted pretty good).

When our food came, we prayed and dug in. The girl had asked me if I wanted it hot or mild, and I chose hot since I figured these Kansans don’t know what hot is. Hot meant that they put jalapenos on my salad, which did add a little warmth. I mentioned to my FIL that one of my former employees, who is Indian, had made some spicy rice for us, and how much we liked it, but the peppers wreaked havoc on our systems.

I think that is what triggered the stories about India and "the choking incident".

My FIL has traveled to the jungles of India twice on missions trips – both times in the 1970’s. He has amazing stories about his trips, and they usually involve humor, as well. I’ve heard some of them, but I never tire of hearing them again or learning new things. Dad is a great storyteller…he takes his time, waits for your reaction, and plods right through the details (which I have complete confidence are absolutely true). He has most of his stories captured in letters to my MIL, and I think he should type them up and publish a book. I would buy it!

I think the story that caused my choking fit had to do with tigers and bicycles. Some jungle men (wearing little else besides a string and a handkerchief – Dad’s description) came to one of their meetings and asked that they go and speak to their people. They lived out in the jungle, so the best way to get there was to ride a bike – more efficient than walking since a car couldn’t make it on the small roads. Their guide asked Dad’s partner if he could right a bike. The partner said yes, got on the bike, rode a few yards, and promptly fell off. The guide decided that the partner should stay, so Dad set out with the guide and the interpreter. The jungle is dark, so they carried a lantern that was powered by pedaling the bike.

At some distance into the jungle, the guide made everyone stop. He told them that he could smell there was something dead in the jungle, and that meant that a tiger was probably near by. Tigers like to chase and eat things that are moving quickly – even if they’re not hungry, so the guide recommended that they get off their bikes and walk them through the jungle. Well, that’s all fine and good, but remember that lantern? Well, it doesn’t put out any light if you’re walking your bike! So, now they’re wandering through the jungle, in the dark, pushing a bike…because there is a tiger close by!

So, I burst out laughing. Obviously Dad came out of it ok since he’s sitting across from me, so it was ok to laugh…but it wasn’t ok to INHALE a piece of my taco salad shell. I began to cough like a mad woman…I couldn’t breathe, or talk or laugh. After a few minutes, I finally regained my composure.

Dad sat patiently across from me, making sure that he didn’t need to perform the Heimlich maneuver (he is an ambulance driver), and he started up his story once he was convinced I could handle it.

After dinner, he took me on a driving tour of Small Town, Kansas. We drove past the new high school (which didn’t open until WAY after B graduated). We drove by all the schools B did go to, past the City Hall, the library, the Fire Station (where Dad moonlights), the mortuary (where Mom works), and the house where B spent a lot of time growing up. We saw kids riding bikes, moms pushing strollers, and we heard the hum of the cicadas. I felt like we were driving through a Norman Rockwell painting.

It was a great evening.

You might be a redneck…

You might be a redneck if you haul your dead mother to Monkey Run, Arkansas, in a cardboard box shoved in the back of your pickup.

I AM NOT making this up. My MIL is a funeral director, which means we hear all kinds of weird and interesting stories. The other night she came home from work with a doozy. Just in case you’re wondering…YES, this does mean we frequently talk about dead bodies over dinner, and it’s great!

Apparently, a family came in to have a body prepared for a funeral in Arkansas (we’re in Kansas). I guess this part isn’t so rare, but the crazy thing was that they wanted to transport the body themselves (cheaper). On top of that, they didn’t want to purchase a casket for the body (which means less money for the funeral home), they wanted a cardboard box (which is available), AND they wanted to put the cardboard box – with the body – in the back of their truck and drive to Monkey Run, Arkansas.

The box was too long to close the tailgate, so they had to strap the box down and throw some blankets on top of it. And off they drove into the sunset in the direction of Monkey Run.

I have a feeling that maybe all this wasn’t legal on the part of the pickup driver…

Burnt toast

I almost burnt my house down…the old one, not the new one.

On Saturday morning, we were expecting a woman to come see our house for the second time. She was supposed to arrive at 10am, so at 9:30 we turned on all the lights, set the A/C at 78 degrees, and loaded up the dogs to leave for a while. I also closed the appliance garage door (y’know, that cupboard that has a roll-up door that will hide your toaster and coffee maker) half way, making sure that you could see the toaster inside so the lady would know what the thing was for.

Then we left…for 5 ½ hours.

The lady never showed (we were supposed to get a call when they left so we knew we could go back home), so at 2:30 I told B that we HAD to go home because I was leaving the next day and I had a TON of things to do. He said to wait until 3pm (he was watching golf), but I insisted we leave right then.

Our plan was to go home, load up some stuff to take to a friend for a garage sale, then come back so I could pack and get some stuff done. While he was loading everything up, I ran inside just to see if the lady had shown up but no one had called us. As soon as I walked in the house I smelled something burning.

I walked all around the house, but I couldn’t figure out what it was, so I went outside to get Mom. As we walked back into the house I heard this weird buzzzing sound, and all of a sudden I yelled “The toaster!” We ran over to the appliance garage and tried to push up the door, but it wouldn’t budge. The door was hot, the tile was hot, and I was freaking out! I reached in and unplugged the toaster, but we still couldn’t get the door up.

Apparently when I pushed the door down before we left the house, the door pushed down the lever on the toaster, so for 5 ½ hours the toaster was on and it couldn’t shut off. The buzz I heard was the toaster trying to pop up. We decided to open the windows to air out the house and we left to let everything cool down.

We came back a couple hours later with my dad, and he climbed up on the counter, reached through the 4” opening and somehow unscrewed the melted track for the roll-up door from the frame. We pulled the door down and we found a MELTED TOASTER! The track was also demolished, and the inside of the cabinet was scorched, but other than that, there wasn’t any major damage.

God was watching over us that day! I think it would have only been a few more minutes before something actually went up in flames. If our countertop would have been formica instead of tile, it probably would have caught fire before we got home.

Chapter 3

I thought the next time I wrote about our movers, it would be the conclusion…but looks like there will be one chapter in between.

After the strange call from the so-called manager lady, I started thinking about trying to reach my contact directly. I’m going to name her Jill so I don’t have to keep saying “my contact”. Since Jill had called me from her personal number last week, I found it in my caller id and called her back on Friday. I just wanted to tell her what the manager had said and get her reaction. Well, according to Jill, she HAD NOT been fired. She told me that she left the company willingly because she did not agree with how they were doing business. Of course, I wish she would have clued me in earlier so I didn’t use them, but I realize she was being loyal to her job then. She also said that she didn’t know that they were affiliated with this other BAD company. I guess I believe her…she’s been pretty honest with me so far. Anyway, she isn’t completely separated from the company, so I’m hoping maybe she can still help me out with my shipment.

My plan is to call the movers later this week to make sure our stuff is scheduled to be shipped out on time to reach KS by September 1. I’ll let you know…

I forgot about my peace

This whole mover saga caused me to forget the peace and quiet that I came from just a couple days ago.

Shaver Lake...ahhh, see, I'm calming down already.

4 girlfriends, myself, and 2 very sweet and well behaved babies trekked up to Shaver Lake for a night of peace, chatter, junk food, cards, and laughter. One last trip before Dorothy clicks her heels and heads off to Oz.

We started out the trip with a stop at the outlet mall an hour up the road. Banana Republic and Gap were calling our names. From there, with almost every square inch of the car filled with baby stuff, shopping bags, or junk food, we made our way into the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Now, before the peaceful relaxation could begin we had to make it through the winding roads and up a few thousand feet, but then that childhood scent of pine trees hit me. I looked down the mountain into the smoggy valley, and man, was I glad to be up in the trees. We stayed at a friend's cabin, a beautiful, spacious townhouse just outside the town of Shaver Lake.

This trip was also to celebrate a friend's 30th birthday, but later that night when she fell asleep on the couch while we all chattered away, we almost turned it into a 13th birthday party when we threatened to freeze her bra. The funniest part of this story is that our dear friend suspected we would do that, so she HID her bra. There is NO way we are in our 30's!

We stayed up late into the night playing cards and sharing stories and secrets...so we slept in the next morning. Our wonderful gracious hostess got up before the rest of us and cooked us a yummy breakfast...which had to be delayed just a little when the power went off suddenly. In true chick fashion, we took until noon to get ourselves ready, and then the Nertz competition began (think Solitaire on speed, with 5 screaming girls). By 3pm, we were dreading heading home, but knew we had to, so the clean-up began. In record time, we got everything done and prepared to get in the car.

Of course, the usual always happens after a getaway...the junk food was catching up with us, we were sad we had to go home, we were exhausted from staying up WAY too late, and emotions were high for a TON of different reasons. Our car had our hostess, me, another friend and her baby. We got to the bottom of the mountain and stopped for a caffeine hit and to give the baby a break from the car seat...and for some much needed REAL talk between friends.

It's amazing what you can learn new about a friend over a cup of coffee...even after you've been friends for 15+ years. I'm so thankful for my buddies, and life will not be the same when I'm 1500 miles away from them.

The saga continues...

The movers are gone...but not before they broke the plate over the cable outlet, the moulding on a plant ledge in the basement, AND made a HUGE hole in the wall by my bedroom.

And to think earlier today, I was impressed with how well they were doing. I guess I spoke too soon...

This afternoon while I was explaining to a girlfriend everything that has happened with these movers, my cell phone rang...and who was it, but the customer service manager from the movers -- the woman I've been talking to since my contact went out on "leave". "Leave" is in quotes because this manager lady was calling me to tell me that my contact had been fired for telling me negative and false things about the company. What???

Yup - apparently my contact was fired for being HONEST. Imagine that!! And, oh by the way, my contact DID NOT say disparaging things about the company. She merely told me some websites where I should check out the reputations of movers. After some random man at the office told me that these 2 companies were actually one in the same, I used these websites to find out that the 2nd company was the bad one. My contact did nothing wrong, and I told this manager lady that...in fact, I told her that I CHOSE her company because of the service I received from my contact. Go figures that you lose your job over bringing in business! Sounds to me like they are trying to hide something.

Oh yeah, and don't forget that all my stuff is halfway on their trucks by this point...no turning back! So, after this manager lady asks me to write a glowing review of my experience with them (yeah, right...I'm not opposed to that, but let's wait until the service has been performed, don't ya think?? and see if it's worthy of a glowing review), I hung with her and continued to tell the story to my friend, who I'm pretty sure will NEVER move again, or will at least do it without the assistance of "professionals".

About 45 minutes later, they finish loading everything, and the foreman says we need to finish the paperwork. He walks into the house and goes right for the paperwork, and I say, hold on, let's walk thru the house and make sure everything got loaded. Man, am I glad I did that! On our walk-thru, we found that everything had been loaded, but we found the 3 beforementioned problem areas. He had the nerve to say to me..."are you sure that wasn't there before?"

YES, I'M SURE!!

So, he has to call the office...who promptly says that we can have a $150 discount. Oh, I forgot to mention that this man offered to TAPE up the broken moulding. This isn't a trailer park, is it?

Next up is an issue with the money situation. On top of the astronomical amount to move our goods, he claims to have used $1000 worth of packing supplies -- including 50 rolls of tape! Now, we have spent the last 2 weeks packing EVERYTHING in boxes, with the exception of the furniture. I didn't argue this too much because they did do a good job wrapping and taping all the furniture. So, because of this, the total is higher than I was quoted by a couple hundred dollars. Well, now my check for 40% of the total isn't enough, and he wants the full 40%. I told him, in a calm voice, that the manager lady had said that I only needed 40% of the ESTIMATE, and I could pay the balance at delivery...well, here goes another call to the office. Turns out I'm right...of course.

So, with all things settled, paperwork signed, check handed over, he then turns to me and asks if I want to give him something for the guys? What the???

I said, um, there's a hole in my wall, I bought them McD's for lunch, I think that's enough...so he said thank you and left. And now I'm pretty sure my stuff is scattered on the roadway somewhere on the grapevine, never to be seen again. I'm sure glad I took those scrapbooks out!

The next chapter of this story will come once our stuff, or what's left of it, is delivered...unless I've been committed by then.

Not much I can do now...

Well, the day is here...the movers are here and loading things like crazy onto 2 different trucks. We finished the packing about 20 minutes before they arrived today.

There has already been some good news about one aspect of our move...my baby (I mean Saab) arrived safely at my in-laws in small town Kansas. The guy picked it up on time, and arrived on time in KS, and everything worked out great...if anyone ever has to transport a vehicle, I recommend FedEx!

Today a different company is loading all our worldly possessions onto trucks to store them for a week or so, then load them on a DIFFERENT truck to transport them to KS. Everything that has happened with these movers in the last 48 hours is EXACTLY what all the websites say to look out for. I don't know if I'm paranoid or have a legitimate reason to be concerned.

I chose this company based on the great customer service I had in booking them as well as their reputation, as I could verify it. 2 days ago I found out that they operate under a 2nd company name (which shall remain anonymous until this move is over), and this 2nd company has an "F" rating with the BBB. The complaints on file are horrendous -- things getting stolen, broken, held hostage, prices higher than quoted, and on and on.

Since my emotional state of mind is a little tentative these days, I promptly broke into tears! So, of course the first person I call is Mom. Thank God for cell phones! While I was unloading on Mom, the customer service manager called me, so I hung up with mom and clicked over to her. She explained that the company I booked with was an offshoot of a family company (which is the other name I found associated with them), and both companies continued to operate separately. Well, the 2nd company had definite issues and a few months ago they asked the first company to help them fix those problems, so they started operating as the same company. She told me that the crew that was coming to do my move were different people than the other company, and that I had NOTHING to worry about. She said I would be satisfied and she would answer all my questions and stay in touch with me. So, I felt a little better, but I also knew it was too late to change anything.

So, I came home, took my scrapbooks out of the boxes since those can not be replaced, and I made sure that everything was packed extremely well. This morning, they showed up -- only 30 minutes late, but they're coming from LA, so that's understandable. The crew has 7 people, and they're all very nice, and I'm impressed with how well they wrapped the furniture so that it will stay protected in transit. Of course, they charge us extra for every inch of tape they use, so I'm not sure if they're trying to protect my stuff or if they're trying to charge us extra. Oh yeah, the other thing that freaked me out is they showed up in trucks that DO NOT have their company name on them, and one is even an Enterprise rental truck...the internet warns you about that, too.

They had to bring 2 trucks since we have so much stuff, so from here, they'll drive to LA, unload everything in storage (which sounds ridiculous to me as an industrial engineer -- how inefficient is that??!), then RELOAD in some time in the next week to 10 days, and drive it to KS. We bought them all McDonald's for lunch, hoping to make a connection with them which will translate into more care for our stuff.

They've worked very quickly, and they're friendly...I'll keep you updated as the process continues...it's out of my hands and right into God's now. Please God watch out for us!

Fresh Mowed Grass

This morning I was driving around with the top down running errands when all of a sudden, I smelled one of the most wonderful scents in the world...fresh mowed lawn. Not just like someone mowing their front lawn...I'm talking about acres of lawn being mowed...like on a school campus. And then it hit me, a very distinct memory of starting school as a child. I always associated starting school with the clean fresh smell of just mowed grass. A new school year, a new beginning, and newly mowed grass...

So, then I started thinking of all the other scents I associate with growing up. Here are a few:

  • The smell of black permanent markers reminds me of school field trips...my mom would wrap a can of Coke in foil and pack our lunches in brown paper bags with our names written in black markers on the outside. A can of Coke was a treat reserved just for field trips.
  • Ammonia and disinfectect...the nursing home where my Great Grandpa spent his final years. I loved him and I loved visiting with him and family when we went to see him, but I HATED the smell of the hospital. To help us escape the sadness of the halls, Dad would take us to the old Coke machine - where you put in your money, slid the door over and pulled out a bottle of Coke - and get us a treat.
  • Pine trees...clean, fresh, strong...the scent we smelled about 25 minutes before we reached our camping destination in the Sequoia Mountains. We knew we were getting close when Dad rolled down the window, we breathed in clean air, and we smelled the trees.
  • Eucalyptus trees...the smell of the Central Coast of California...a smell I came to love during college...when the central coast became my home. Every time I go back to visit, a million memories come rushing back from college.

For just a few minutes this morning, I was transported back to the first day of every year of elementary school...when life was much simpler...and fresh mowed grass signified the beginning of something new and exciting.

End of an era

I'm not sure if I'd call it an era, but I had my last day at work today. I've been there over 3 years...that's a record for me. The only other place I've worked longer was my part time job in college where I worked in the bookstore for about 3 1/2 years.

It didn't feel like my last day. I worked 10 hours (just like normal), took a 15 minute lunch break, ran around like I was going to miss a deadline -- which I guess I kinda did since I still have my phone and my laptop even though I'm officially off the payroll. What do you call that? It didn't start to hit me that I was leaving until I loaded the last box in the car and started to drive away. I think for the next week or so I'll feel like I'm just on vacation. In fact, at the Karaoke bar tonight (my final going away party -- there have been 3 or 4 and NO, I DID NOT SING), we heard about an injury that happened at the plant this afternoon, and I asked questions like it was still my business. Isn't this the dream...to have a job and be part of a company where you feel so connected?

I love my company -- oops, former company. At least I love everyone at my location. We had our rough times, no question, but lately, things were wonderful. I'm going to miss that. I think I'll find something similar at my new job, but it will take time to create those relationships that made this job so great. Those great relationships mean that I will keep in touch with many people, but it won't be the same, and we'll slowly lose touch.

My team gave me the GREATEST going away gift. 2 tickets to see my NFL team play at home (which will now be close to my new home). How awesome is that??? And they're good seats to boot. My hubby and I have been strategizing how we were going to score tickets to EVERY home game this year....well, we're one game closer to that goal. Go Team!

Oh, and I finally reserved an auto transport for my baby, er, car. I booked with a division of FedEx...nothing I could find on the internet said anything bad about them...AND they insure my car for up to $100,000, AND it gets to ride in an ENCLOSED trailer. I'll let you know how it goes. The bad news is they have to pick up the car this week, otherwise, I might have to wait for 3-4 weeks for another truck. That means that my in-laws will have to receive and store the car until I get there about 12 days from now.

Now...if we could just sell that house...actually, both houses...

Sell this house!

Have you ever watched the show Sell This House on A&E? This team goes in and helps people who are having a hard time selling their house. Usually, they make recommendations like remove the clutter, make sure everything is clean, go with neutral colors...HELLOO!!! I've done all that! From Day One!

Why is no one buying my house? Hmm, I guess it's because the bottom has dropped out of the market in the last 9 months.

We had an open house today...1 person came. Of course, it only takes one person to buy a house, but was this the right person?

My house is IMMACULATE. It hasn't been this clean since we moved in. I scrubbed and decluttered and scrubbed and vacuumed and it looks great!!

Sell This House would walk into my house and say the same thing that I'm saying...why isn't this house selling??

Freezer Finds

Have you ever decided to not buy any new food and just live off what is currently in your fridge, pantry and freezer?

Well, that becomes a necessity when you're moving. My husband keeps freaking out that we have nothing to eat...but we have tons to eat! Ethiopian kids would be in heaven! You just might have to put together some non-traditional combinations...how about some pinto beans, tuna, and frozen berries? Or maybe some mustard, italian dressing, dried milk and green beans?

I have to say that we're doing a pretty good job working through some of that stuff. The canned stuff I can move, but we have to get rid -- one way or another -- of all the perishable stuff. I cleaned out the fridge the other day, and there's not too much left. We'll never finish all the mustard and salad dressing, but we're trying pretty hard to eat up the more expensive stuff.

I think we should all do this a couple times a year...even if you're not moving anywhere...I can't believe how much junk we buy that never gets eaten...ever!!

I FINALLY started packing today after my mom reminded me that the movers show up in 12 days. I packed 3 boxes, and then I got tired. Of course, I'm also trying to get the house spotless for an open house we're having tomorrow. So, I think I've been pretty productive today.

Our ding dong realtor put a key in the lockbox that DOES NOT WORK! We had 2 different people who wanted to see the house yesterday, and they couldn't get in! Hopefully they'll come tomorrow during the open house.

I still haven't booked anyone to transport my car to KS. Are there no more honest people left in this world??? Every time I find a company that I think might transport my car safely and honestly...I find some horror story about them on the internet, and then I freak out again. If we weren't planning to drive from CA to KS in 2.5 days, then I would suggest to B that we just drive our own cars. The plan is to drive his car with the dogs and take turns driving so we can make better time...but if we drive that much, I don't want to be in separate cars because someone will probably end up falling asleep.

Anyone know of a good auto transport company??? I need help!

Well, I've been sitting on the couch for too long...better start packing or cleaning again!
