Hair Through the Ages

I've been wanting to do this post for a while now...but I had to get my lazy butt in gear and scan some old photos. So, I finally did.

Let's start with this fun picture from about 1983...my mom had always kept my hair long and straight, but I wanted it short, and in a bowl cut...and I should have listened to Mom. She FINALLY gave in to me, and let me cut it...and after you see this picture, you'll know why I immediately started growing it out again!

My hair has changed quite a bit over the years. I used to think that I was pretty blah when it came to my hair. For years and years (ok, all of high school and most of college), I just had long, straight hair.

That's me on the bottom left. This is a group of friends from high school, and most of us are my "Buddies." Aren't we HOT??

My last year of so of college, I got really brave and cut layers in my hair. Woo hoo!

Right after I graduated from college, I started growing out my bangs. I was workingin a food manufacturing plant where I had to wear a hairnet and hard hat, and the bangs thing just wasn't working anymore. This was also when I started playing with color, and well, I got a little addicted.

A couple years after college, I chopped the hair off all together, and went super short. You know how when you have something (long hair) and you see people everywhere with something else (short hair), you want it? Yeah, well, that was me. And once I cut it to my shoulders, then it seemed like no big deal to keep going...

and then...my sister and my mom started following suit. Without even knowing it, we'd all end up with similar haircuts. Here is my and sis in 1999...

As time went by, I continued to get brave. I'd grow it out past my shoulders, get tired of it, live with it in a pony tail for months, and then chop it all off.

In 2003, I went drastic. I found a picture of Lisa Rinna with short crazy hair, and I had to have it. My good buddy Kerri was cutting my hair at the time, and she said, "let's go for it." So, we dyed my hair an awesome red and chopped it off...right before Shell's wedding. Here's The Colonel and I on our way to see Shell tie the knot.

I loved the cut, but it was way too much work for me. So, about 6 weeks after I got it, I started letting it grow out. It looked like this for a while (notice the trend, and the cut that I keep going back to??)...

Here's Sis and I at her wedding in 2004...looking a little better than before, doncha think??

From this point on, I just kept getting blonder and blonder and blonder...and man, was it fun!

Here's The Colonel and I at our birthdays in 2005...

And us at Christmas later that year...

And in 2007...

I loved the blonde, but I HATED the roots growing out, and 2 weeks after it had been done, I was wanting to go back for more...so, I started going darker and redder again...and you've all seen the latest short cut I have (fat face and all)...

Oh, and notice how The Colonel's hair never changes?? It just gets a little thinner on top. =)

If I did this post it would never change.. I have always had long hair, except mine is naturally curly. I do straighten it on occasion, but it typically has been the same style for 20+ years. I got brave once and told the stylist to go crazy.. She chickened out.... Oh well!

yet another way you and i have led parallel lives! just last night hubby and i were talking about all the times i have changed my hair and that's only in the 9 years we have been together. it started well before that with me, too!

one of the most traumatic times was when i was in kindergarden. i had beautiful long hair and my mom was tired of doing it all the time so she cut it all off and i had the dorothy hamill cut for a while until it grew out. i have to say that my haircut now is even more traumatic than that as i never wanted it cut so short in the first place. but, at least being preggers helps it grow faster...!!

Shell, that's so funny that your mom cut your long hair b/c she was tired of doing it. My mom didn't want to cut it b/c she'd have to curl it every day...when it was long, she just stuck it in a pony tail.

I'm sure it killed her to cut it, I can't believe I ever convinced her...more proof that my mom knew what she was talking about all along!

I had always had that boy-bowl cut. Bangs in front, one length in back, and framing the face. I got all upset with mom one year (I was barely 4!) and told her I wanted it LONG. She said, "you scream every time I touch your head. You learn to take care of it, then you can do anything you want." So... I learned to wash, dry and style my hair. I have had long hair ever since. Mostly. The length I am at right now is what I have settled into. It could stand to be trimmed to match yours.

When I dyed my hair in my freshman year in college (first time), little old ladies at church were all sorts of upset. Mom said, "if that is her only rebellion, that is fine with me. At least she is NOT piercing everything she can, sleeping around, doing drugs or drinking."

So, I like a medium auburn. I haven't done color in almost 2 years. I think I need to, at least one more time.

You hair is gorgeous. Who does your hair here in Wichita? My hair girl moved to Mexico. And I am totally needing a new do.

I think the shorter style suits you better but we have to really please ourselves. I've had the same style now for many years, sometimes shorter but basically the same. Right now, I love it shoulder length and so does G. I have such thick hair. I really like it long enough to put up off my neck when its hot.
The color is supposed to be dark, dark brown, almost black. Since I'm alergic to hair color, I can't cover the grey so we do hi/low lights. I guess eventually I'll have to let it go grey but I hope not.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane. You and the colonel have been together awhile.

I certainly make more of an effort when my hair is short, since I can't just throw it into a pony tail. And it's pretty easy, because I usually just flat iron it.

Chelf - I never thought about hair color as rebellion...unless you dyed it purple or something! =)

Buddies - I can't believe NONE of you had any comments about me posting the flowery Winter Dinner picture...ha!

Mama Bear - thick hair runs in our family, too, so there's always a lot of thinning that goes on when we get it cut.

Abbagirl - I go to Kelly at New Dimensions (Maple and Maize) and I LOVE her. She's great! Email me if you want to try her out.

neat post! I'd like to do something like it to but don't have a scanner at home. I love the Lisa Rinna 'do, but they all look cute on you!

v.funny post. LOL about the buddies in floral. my sis recently did a post about her friends wearing "ann of green gables" floral in college.and i always thought of you as blonde but the new shade is lovely on you. I was just telling my friends last night that my mom always cut my hair in a short bowl and always said "no, you can't have long hair". Because of this, I've had longer hair most of my adult life.

No, never purple. Usually a lighter than my natural dark brown, and auburn. I still have an inch or two from two years ago.

I do know a guy who dyed his hair pink at O.C. He was told that it was against student handbook policy, and to go to something "within the natural spectrum" -- he went to black, and in the right light it looked Purple. Very funny.
